Graffiti artists are often unknown or anonymous, but when they are known they are likely to identify as men. Street art comes with barriers to entry for women, and as explained by feminist scholar Dr. Jessica Pabón, who grew up among graffiti artists, “Gendered and racialized Western social conventions associate graffiti with criminality, criminality with masculinity, and masculinity with cisgendered men.” Street Heroines introduces three emerging Latina artists in the street-art worlds of New York City, Sao Paulo, and Mexico City, exploring how they built their artistic identities and forged their paths in a male-dominated subculture. Registration is encouraged but not required, and the screening is free! – Kat McNevins
