Strawberry Mansion

Grace Glowicki: That's a name that's become increasingly familiar in genre film circles over the last few years. She's currently riding high on two critically acclaimed oddities – as the lead of sci-fi-tinged relationship drama Honey Bunch and the star, writer, and director of resurrection rom-com Dead Lover. However, she arguably became a subject of indie fascination with 2020’s Strawberry Mansion, in which she plays an artist behind on her taxes. That doesn’t sound so unusual, but this is 2035, when dreams are a taxable asset, and that’s how she meets tax assessor James Preble (Kentucker Audley), who loses himself in her dreams while calculating her debt. Audley pulled double-duty as co-director with Albert Birney, who gained cult status himself for this year’s black-and-white video gaming flashback, Obex. Between them they created a lo-fi retro-future gem, perfect for Hyperreal’s Discovery Zone. – Richard Whittaker
