Odd World, We Luv Video’s series centering on “What were they thinking?” cinema, comes back into orbit after a summer hiatus with Spawn, one of the most bizarrely misguided yet oddly fascinating superhero movies ever made. In this abysmal adaptation of Todd McFarlane’s groundbreaking comic, the great Nicol Williamson was brought in to basically re-create his role as Merlin in the far superior Excalibur (also screening this week). He plays the mentor to Spawn (Michael Jai White), a murdered super-soldier who has broken out of Hell to become a gun-toting demon of vengeance, taking on an unrecognizable John Leguizamo in a massive rubber clown suit. Somehow, the studio managed to get Martin Sheen caught up in this, and his terrible dye job may be the only image that’s less convincing than the CGI. – Richard Whittaker
