What starts as an attempt to retrace the bloody footsteps of General William T. Sherman’s March on the South during the Civil War turns into a solipsistic, goofy diary of director Ross McElwee’s efforts to move on after a recent breakup. McElwee’s sense of humor grounds this Film School 101 example of documentary filmmaking’s conundrum: Are you capturing the “truth” of the intended subject, or the “truth” of making a documentary about it? Which, in this case, involves a bunch of charming Southern belles more than a dusty history lesson.
