Sew Much Fun: Squids

Ever since they genetically split off in the Jurassic to become unlike other cephalopods, these mollusks have been scootin’ around the sea in all sorts of sizes. There’s small guys like the Japanese native firefly squid, who in adulthood reach about three inches in length, or medium dudes like the Uroteuthis Chinesis, known in Korean as Hanchi or mitre squid. Then there’s the big ones, aka the squids that fooled seasick sailors into putting monsters on all their maps ’cause they couldn’t understand anything natural being THAT big. For example, there is the colossal squid, also known as Antarctic cranch squid or giant squid – but they’re not The Giant Squid, aka Architeuthis dux, which are a primo case of abyssal gigantism. I’ll let you look up that term on your own time. Anyway, this Wednesday at the library you can go hand-sew your own felt squid in whatever size you chose – all of which will probably match the dimensions of pencil-headed mollusks currently swimming. – James Scott
