In Latin, “genius loci” refers to a place’s spiritual guardian, but as the years wear down the finer Roman points on the phrase, the meaning has shifted more toward a place’s vibe than its protector. Mixed media artist Samantha Melvin invokes this later interpretation in her show at Link & Pin by identifying local plant diversity as the true “spirits of the place.” In the utilization of botanical shapes, Melvin explores how the fauna native to an area function as a metaphor for where we as humans plant ourselves. The show opens this Thursday with a reception on Saturday, Sept. 6, and an artist talk on Sept. 14.
