I have a thing for rocks. When I travel, be it to South America or just to the park on the other side of town, I fill my pockets with shiny stones, perfectly round pebbles, and even the jagged shards of cement. But I can’t tell a granite from a quartz, nor a chunk of pavement from obsidian. Luckily, the Austin Gem and Mineral Society will be offering professional rock ID at Rock Fest. Spend your Saturday digging for fossils, cracking geodes, and doing a kid-friendly scavenger hunt. Roll up your sleeves and leave no stone unturned. – Sarah Andrews
