Riverbend

A lot about the modern world sucks sour lemons, but a real highlight is the current restoration resurgence booming in genre film. Take, for example, the 6K restoration done by Reelblack Renaissance with the original directors’ supervision on this 1989 actioner that only existed previously on VHS and Betamax. No official DVD release meant talk about the Texas-shot feature following three Black Vietnam vets leading an uprising in a small racist Georgia town was limited to tapeheads swapping secondhand copies. That was until Reelblack founder Michael J. Dennis uncovered a 35mm print from South Africa. Now, 37 years later, this nearly lost Black indie cinema classic screens for Drafthouse’s Weird Wednesday – with a Blu-ray release shipping from Reelblack this June. – James Scott
