Austin trumpeter Rachel Spencer spent the last decade and a half in the sphere of music education, teaching and working toward her doctorate. But she’s also made the rounds of local clubs, and toured as lead trumpet in the road version of The Addams Family: A Musical Comedy. Now she’s written and recorded The Next Right Thing, her debut album, set for release in September. A melody-first player in the tradition of Roy Hargrove and Blue Mitchell, about whom she wrote her dissertation, Spencer presents a sneak preview of the record alongside saxophonist Matt Maldonado, pianist Ben Irom, bassist Liam O’Dell, and drummer Mati Soto. – Michael Toland
