When we hear the term “protest music,” we think of earnest folk and angry broadsides. But jazz has a long tradition of protest songs, like Charles Mingus’ seething “Fables of Faubus” and Sonny Rollins’ mighty Freedom Suite. Veteran guitarist Carl Michel presents those pieces, as well as songs by Charlie Haden, Horace Silver, and the late Abdullah “Dollar Brand” Ibrahim, as a comment on our disturbing times. He’ll be joined by Coke/Michel Sextet bandmates Alex Coke on sax and Carolyn Trowbridge on vibes, Andre Hayward on trombone, Rachel Spencer on trumpet, Nori singer Akina Adderley, poet Zell Miller III, and more.
