Despite its musicianly bent, Austin suffers a dearth of jazz fusion acts, so claiming one of the 21st century’s best is reason to celebrate. Progger – led by saxophonist/keyboardist/composer Brian Donohoe – has been re-taking local stages of late in anticipation of its fifth album Chronology. Groovy recent singles “Frith Variations” and “Mister Brown and Mochi Jones” indicate strong influences of modern R&B, though first wave “Exposition” keeps the faith with the melodic riffs and burning solos of old. Donohoe will be joined by guitarists Matt Muehling and Chris McQueen, bassist Matt Weatherly, and drummer Daniel Watson – Progger stalwarts all. – Michael Toland
