Parliament-Funkadelic grew out of the ashes of the Plainfield, N.J.-based Parliaments, a doo-wop/R&B group who released Top 20 Billboard pop hit “(I Wanna) Testify” in 1967. After label struggles, George Clinton reformed the group as Funkadelic, a funk-rock band, with an overlapping but distinct R&B-based funk group, Parliament, arriving a few years later. The influential collective released classic albums, including Maggot Brain (1971, under Funkadelic), the Afrofuturist masterpiece Mothership Connection (1975, under Parliament), and One Nation Under a Groove (1978, under Funkadelic). All-timers “Tear the Roof Off the Sucker” and “Flash Light” are sure to be in the set list. – Kahron Spearman
