Play It Loud! How Toronto Got Soul

Pan-African Film Festival

The Austin wing of the Los Angeles-based celebration of the cinema of Africa and the African diaspora returns for a fourth year filled with highlights from this year’s festival. The three-day event opens with Muganga, the One Who Treats, Marie-Hélène Roux’s stunning documentary focusing on Nobel Prize winner Denis Mukwege and his fight to highlight the use of rape as a weapon of war. The mini-fest also explores the person behind a famous saying (Black Is Beautiful: The Kwame Brathwaite Story), the birth and resurrection of an unexpected musical scene (Play It Loud! How Toronto Got Soul) and a transatlantic romance (Montmartre), plus a special 20th anniversary screening of body-positive comedy Phat Girlz with director Nnegest Likké in attendance. – Richard Whittaker
