Open Canopy

There’s more to the Austin art experience than going to various pop-ups or vendor markets, and even a few events that are easy on the wallet. Take, for example, local gallery hub Canopy’s monthly open house. In addition to highlighting longtime tenants like ICOSA Collective, Ivester Contemporary, SAGE Studios, and new kid on the block Almost Real Things, these first-Saturday socials open up Canopy’s myriad artist studio spaces to the public, which means you’ll see works-in-progress from ceramics to oil pastels, collage to acrylic – as well as finished pieces available for purchase. But that’s not all! Check out Museum of Human Achievement, a warehouse-sized spectacular of eccentric art performances, or CRAFT, a creative workshop space available for lessons or just general crafting, or Sa-Tén, a cafe filled with Japanese-style dishes, desserts, and drinks. But that’s just if the free cocktails – always a feature – don’t keep you totally satisfied. – James Scott
