Director Isao Takahata (The Tale of the Princess Kaguya) – and producer Hayao Miyazaki, so you know it’s good – weaves a deeply sentimental meditation on childhood dreams into a 27-year-old girl’s train ride to visit her relatives in the countryside. As she travels, she toggles between the present as she meets a young farmer Toshio (in the English cast, Dev Patel; in the Japanese cast, Toshiro Yanagiba) and memories of her childhood, first romances, and school days. The delicate piano score by Katsu Hoshi is alone enough to make you sniffle over your forgotten youth, but keep in mind, this is also the guy who directed Grave of the Fireflies. For the 35th anniversary of this nostalgia-bomb, Galaxy is showing both the English dubbed version (Sunday) and the Japanese subtitled version (Tuesday), so choose wisely. – Lina Fisher
