Obscura, Allegaeon, Cognitive, Cryptosis, Entity of Chaos

Pity SXSW gave up for dead on one of the most enduring and universal genres. Remember Metallica at Stubb’s? Relapse Records showcasing the likes of Mastodon and High on Fire over a decade span? Norwegian Vikings Enslaved opening for Motörhead ruled. Rejoice, then, that far from the madding festival crowd, German tech-death progressives Obscura obliterate on a Monday. Twenty-four years and seven full-lengths finally land last year’s A Sonication back at the Bavarians’ local HQ on Riverside Drive. Frontman mainstay Steffen Kummerer still brings the Teutonic grandeur (“Evenfall”), which will pair shreddingly with Denver analog Allegaeon, themselves knocking toward the double-decade mark.
