Texas history holds a wealth of long-read and podcast-worthy juiciness. So it’s no surprise that one of our spooky state’s most well-known true crime tales has been brought to the screen – but this documentary’s unique take transcends the true crime genre into something more morally grounded, perhaps resulting in real change. In collaboration with the Innocence Project, director Deborah Esquenazi (in attendance at this screening for a Q&A) reinvestigates the case of a gay Apache man, James Reyos, who was framed for the murder of a closeted Catholic priest in 1981 Odessa. The documentary follows the chief of police and district attorney’s office as they rebuild the case in hopes of exonerating James in this AFS Grant-supported film. – Lina Fisher
