“New Year’s Eve, Santa Rita Courts”

The city’s first public housing project completed under the U.S. Housing Act of 1937 was Santa Rita Courts near Pleasant Valley and Second Street, and after more than eight decades, it’s time for renovations. Residents began relocating last fall, with New Year’s Eve the deadline to clear out. Local photographer Chester, whose family immigrated to the U.S. from the Philippines in the mid-Nineties, captured the last day of Santa Rita Courts as it was in stark black & white, exploring themes of displacement and longing for connection in an exhibit that’s both touching and historically significant. Catch an artist talk and reception for the exhibit opening Thursday, July 23, 6-8pm. – Kat McNevins
