Carole Lombard, a queen of the screwball genre, and William Powell (best known for the Thin Man movies) play hapless crushes from opposite sides of the tracks in this comedy from the 1930s with subtle zingers that still hit today. Lombard’s spoiled heiress Irene finds Powell’s titular Godfrey living at the city dump during a … rich people’s version of a scavenger hunt? She has to secure a “forgotten man,” someone who’s lost their job and home in the Great Depression. Anyway she takes him home and offers him a butler job with a hilarious delivery of the line, “Do you buttle?” Hijinks ensue as Godfrey enters the chaotic world of Irene’s out-of-touch family, and lovers come together, and everything is implausible but perfect, as is the way with the first golden era of rom-coms. – Lina Fisher
