Austin Film Society has this Australian film plugging into their latest Essential Cinema series, “Somewhere Else, Always: Restless Women and the City,” but this could just as easily fit into the Queer Film Theory 101 oeuvre developed by Micheal Foulk. That’s where ostensibly “straight” movies carry deep veins of queer subtext visible only to the discerning eye. See, despite how the titular matrimonial event has an embryonic Toni Collette wedding a South African swimming star only interested in the citizenship her love wins him, this movie’s really about the romance of Muriel and her best friend Rhonda – two people whose love for ABBA and each other proves stronger than compulsive heterosexuality. Silly, sweet, and full of Swedish pop-soundtracked longing, consider this flick your ticket out of Porpoise Spit. – James Scott
