Despite being one of the most prominent Japanese animation directors – and perhaps the best adult animation creator ever, IMO – Satoshi Kon still retains several underseen gems amongst his tragically short filmography. If Perfect Blue is the go-to reference for parasocial relationships gone rotten, then Millennium Actress is its lesser-seen but equally important companion piece. A retired actress recounting her life to a documentary crew becomes fertile ground for discussions of memory, movies, and how, for many, there’s little separation between the two – all showcased in Kon’s incredibly inventive visuals. Art and its creation can be frightening, but it’s also what makes life worth living. – James Scott
