“Mask of Sarnath – The Nightmare Cut” World Premiere

H.P. Lovecraft wrote The Doom that Came to Sarnath, but UT RTF student Neil Ruttenberg brought the doom from Sarnath to Austin with his 1981 black-and-white short about a gallery robbery that goes terribly, terribly wrong. “The Mask of Sarnath” became a cult hit after being curated by Jonathan Demme as part of his Made in Texas selection, and now Ruttenberg is summoning a new edit called the Nightmare Cut, set to the music of industrial pioneers Throbbing Gristle. The world premiere event will feature screenings of both the original edit and the new Nightmare Cut, and “Her Dog Satan,” Scott Conn's 1991 experimental drama set in Austin's punk scene. Stick around through the credits for some familiar Chronicle names, plus live sets from two local punk pioneers – Larry Seaman of Standing Waves and Steve Marsh of Terminal Mind. The first 50 ticket buyers get a special memento for the night. – Richard Whittaker
