Maqam Gathering: Exploring the Shared Musical Language of the Eastern Mediterranean

One of humanity’s oldest musical languages takes over this East Austin gallery for an evening of music, exploration, and conversation. Maqam has roots in multiple cultures, including Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Greek, Central Asian, and North African traditions, so this gathering aims to highlight a different “constellation” of its shared universe over a series of events. Guiding this journey are hosts Roberto Paolo Riggio, Dimitris Gkoulimaris, and Hamid Reza Fallahi, who welcome attendees whether they’re fellow musicians or merely willing listeners. – James Scott
