Consider me Michael Mann-pilled, folks, because I’m officially tossing this down as the definitive Red Dragon adaptation – in fact, perhaps the most definitive Thomas Harris adaptation, period! As much as love remains in my heart for the iconic Silence of the Lambs and the carnal Hannibal NBC series, Mann struck gold with his heightened procedural translation of Harris’ text. These are men doing their jobs, and doing those jobs well – whether that’s being a killer, a FBI agent, or a preternaturally empathic consultant. Like every Mann protagonist since Thief, William Petersen’s Will Graham is haunted by his work and yet cannot stop himself from putting in more hours at the catching-murderers mine. Ah, well. At least he’s losing his mind to a killer Tangerine Dream soundtrack. – James Scott
