When the cat’s away, the mice will play – especially if the mice are actually two sisters who plan to off their employer, aka the cat. This collaborative production between Mad Cat and Dirty Gold Theatre brings to Austin a little slice of French absurdism via Jean Genet’s play about maids whose plot to murder their mistress reveals itself through a pantomime filled with – as Genet writes in his notes on how to perform the play – a furtive atmosphere that’s sexual but not too erotic. How that plays out is up to performers Allison Paranka, Angelina Castillo, and Maddie Scanlan, who also wears the director’s hat. – James Scott
