At a single tweenage sleepover, yours truly was introduced to two lifelong cinematic obsession objects. One was Drop Dead Fred, which you won’t hear my thoughts about until We Luv or Hyperreal programs it as part of a Rik Mayall tribute series. The other? Jim Henson’s fantasy musical starring David Bowie, Jennifer Connelly, and a whole lotta freaky-deaky puppets. Should you either be a fellow fan of female coming-of-age tales or merely curious about goblin king Jareth’s revealing tights, there’s much to consider in this strange world Henson created – including baby’s first introduction to the word “oubliette.” Screens as part of the Paramount Summer Classic Film Series for the movie’s 40th anniversary. – James Scott
