L. Shankar

For a while there in the Seventies and Eighties, there may have been a law that legendary Tamil violinist L. Shankar either had to be on your fusion or prog album, or you had to play with someone he had played with. From Shakti, his full-band collaboration with John McLaughlin, to co-writing the score for The Last Temptation of Christ and a decades-long blurring of the line between Western jazz and Indian classical with his double-violin virtuosity, Shankar remains a singular force, a class of one. He will be accompanied by tabla player Amit Kavthekar. – Joe Gross
