“Accountability” hasn’t necessarily been in the vocabularies of law enforcement agencies across the board lately, if ever. Austin Police Oversight is doing what it can to make inroads into APD to ensure that someone is watching those tasked with serving and protecting. This series of focus groups gives Austinites a voice in updating the group’s “Know Your Rights” materials for 2026. In practice – and perhaps depending on how blue the state you live in is – those rights aren’t always respected, but at least we can offer a guide to what that law says and hope for change in the future. – James Renovitch
