Kids Create: Collage Inspired by Romare Bearden

American artist Romare Bearden (1911-1988) mastered the art of storytelling through collage and likened it to the call-and-response of jazz improvisation, saying, “You put down one color, and it calls for an answer.” As part of its Black History Month programming, the Austin Public Library celebrates Bearden, who was influenced and inspired by figures from the Harlem Renaissance like Augusta Savage, Duke Ellington, Zora Neale Hurston, and Langston Hughes. This workshop is recommended for kids ages 5-12, and materials will be provided. – Kat McNevins
