If you think Christmas specials begin with Andy Williams and end with Pat Boone, think again. In 1979, the BBC gave rising star Kate Bush total artistic freedom for her own one-hour celebration of the season. What she gave them was Kate, an hour of music and dance that almost completely lacks any reference to the season but remains a landmark in art-pop. Honestly, the only weirder moment of yuletide musical programming was when Bing Crosby performed “The Little Drummer Boy” with David Bowie, and that was just cognitive dissonance. This is a true creative experience. Combining elements of her Tour of Life stage show and previously unreleased material from the upcoming Never for Ever album, with a special appearance from Peter Gabriel, it’s a reminder of the untrammeled genius of Bush.
