This is one of those films that blurs the line between documentary and fiction with dizzying results. Following the toxic relationship of real-life lesbian porn star Sharon Mitchell and her girlfriend Tigr Mennett as they make a porn version of the opera Carmen, the entire film was scripted – but Tigr and Sharon were actually together, actually performed in porn flicks, and actually shot up onscreen. The director, Juliet Bashore, was fresh off film school when she made this, and you can tell. This is the work of someone preoccupied with the nature of reality, performance, and “truth” as conveyed through the slippery medium of film. – Lina Fisher
