Journey to Italy

Just a few years before Ingrid Bergman and Roberto Rossellini split, they collaborated on this 1954 film about a married couple contemplating divorce while on vacation near Naples. Moving away from the Italian neorealism tradition he pioneered, Rossellini cast his wife and George Sanders (All About Eve) – certified movie stars – as a well-to-do husband and wife drifting through Italy on separate tracks. The film makes great use of the region’s antiquities and especially the landscape, mining the bones of Pompeii to moving effect, and Bergman in particular is striking in her (still-luminous) maturity and domestic disillusionment. – Kimberley Jones
