Sturgill Simpson is in his jam era. The latest LP from that chameleon Kentucky songwriter, Johnny Blue Skies’ Mutiny After Midnight, delivers a call to revolution through any and every means necessary, from tearing down the system to the explicit opening call to “Make America Fuk Again.” And Simpson does his part, providing a soundtrack that pulses a deep disco funk behind his country-crooked dirty drawl, mixing in everything from gritty ZZ Top guitar groove to Southern rock keyboard boogies and bursts of anthemic sax. It’s an eclectic and intoxicating romp with bite, as Simpson continues a mission to explode expectations. – Doug Freeman
