While nowhere near Willis Alan Ramsey territory, the fact it took eight years between John Fullbright’s second album and third – and that we’re now four years down the road from 2022’s The Liar – doesn’t necessarily bode well for the Okie’s fan stronghold of South Austin. Famously from Woody Guthrie’s hometown of Okemah, the song virtuoso long compared to GOATs of the craft (Dylan, Earle, Van Zandt) doubled down on the piano last time around, The Liar’s title track ruminating hard on faith. That perhaps puts the Tulsa-based Fullbright in conversation with this same venue’s May 22 booking, polymath Joseph Arthur. Either way, the Church of 78704 will draw pilgrims en masse for this master storyteller. – Raoul Hernandez
