With Los Angeles punk pioneers X now largely retired from the road, bandleader and longtime Austin resident John Doe turns January’s Thursday nights into a quiet local homecoming. Doe trades his bass for an acoustic guitar in the John Doe Folk Trio, formed during COVID with Willie Nelson bassist Kevin Smith and drummer Conrad Choucroun, and heard to subtle effect on 2022’s Fables in a Foreign Land. The Continental’s intimate upstairs room is an ideal setting for their darkly poetic frontier ballads. – Tim Stegall
