Houston vibraphonist Jalen Baker made his bones playing with peers like Johnathan Blake, Ulysses Owens, and fellow H-town badass Paul Cornish. But it’s on his solo records where he’s really come into his own. His broad melodic sense backs up his mallet skills on versatile albums like the brand-new RePaved. Jessica Healey has prowled the clubs of Austin for a few years now, both as frontwoman for her jazz quintet and as a singer-songwriter blending pop, folk, and R&B like the daughter of Corinne Bailey Rae and Michael Franks.
