ISHIDA is Austin’s gateway for international dance. Director Brett Ishida brings in rising choreographers from around the world, and this latest showcase is no exception, with works from Romanian Edward Clug and British-Finnish Kristian Lever. But even without that glimpse of dance’s global expansion, Ishida’s own choreography is well worth the price of admission. Her work is poignant, story-based, and rich with meaning. Every choice is fully intentional and teased out for a complex night of dance. In Rara avis, Ishida examines a singer tackling imposter syndrome after a hiatus, playing with ideas about the value we bring to the world and ourselves. – Cat McCarrey
