In the Mood for Love

One of the best movies about eating out, as Wong Kar Wai depicts with mouthwatering skill a romance half-born during late-night noodle runs. My first time watching this modern masterpiece was on a borrowed Criterion disc from Editor-in-Chief Kim Jones, and Maggie Cheung and Tony Leung’s chemistry hypnotized even through my diminutive PC monitor. Imagine how hard the yearning will hit you, Reader, when watching this Hong Kong-set dream on the big Paramount screen? As much about love unfulfilled as it is about the ephemeral nature of all places, persons, and things, here’s a great flick to catch in the soon-to-be remodeled Downtown theatre. – James Scott
