Just in time for Austin’s spring-that-feels-like-summer era, AFS’s Lates screens this surreal summer-break flick. Directed by Nobuhiko Obayashi with a story credit deservedly dedicated to his daughter, Chigumi, the story’s supernatural events start when young Gorgeous (Kimiko Ikegami) begs her mysterious aunt to take her and six friends in for the summer rather than spend any more time with her father’s new wife. Each friend comes ready-made with a descriptive name, from the academic Prof to the athletic Kung Fu to the healthy appetite-having Mac. But what they find during their visit to the countryside goes beyond watermelon and a white cat. Spoiler: There’s a freakin’ witch out there! – James Scott
