56 years ago, Marcia Ball’s car broke down in Austin on her way to L.A., and the Louisiana songwriter quickly found home. Ball has been a pillar of Austin’s music scene ever since, from her trailblazing 1970s outfit Freda and the Firedogs to her cornerstoning Antone’s blues divas in the 1980s, and numerous Grammy-nominated and Blues Music Awards-winning albums for her Gulf Coast-fried and bayou-boogied sound. The Paramount rightly serves up honors for their inaugural “Home With the Armadillo” tribute, featuring decades of Ball’s collaborators and acolytes, and benefiting the crucial organization she founded in 2012, HOME (Housing Opportunities for Musicians and Entertainers). – Doug Freeman
