“Hip-Hop America: The Mixtape Exhibit”

Austin’s not high on the list of hip-hop hotbeds, so it’s a wonder how the LBJ Library scored such impressive finds for this new exhibit opening Oct. 4, but we’re not complaining. Curated by the Grammy Museum, “Hip-Hop America” houses several key pieces of ephemera from throughout rap history – including Chuck D’s handwritten lyrics to “Fight the Power,” a pair of Questlove’s drumsticks, and defining articles of clothing worn by Run-D.M.C., LL Cool J, and Biggie. The show tracks hip-hop’s evolution from street culture to world-dominating genre – and reminds us of the artifacts available to view in our own backyard. – Carys Anderson
