Created via high firing with special attention to glazing, the newest series of ceramic figures by Hayun Surl present a strong yet delicately detailed brigade. These “guardians” take inspiration from Korean artifacts, traditional pottery, and Surl’s own experiences moving between cultures. Also, they look really freaking cool, in this writer’s opinion. Ivester unveils the pieces this Saturday, Jan. 17, where viewers can observe this ongoing series’ reflections on “cultural fluidity, adaptation, and identity through ceramic form.” – James Scott
