Hands on a Hardbody

There’s a reason this is taught in every Film 101 class, and it’s not marketing for Nissan: You put 24 Texans hungry for a brand-new truck into an endurance contest, you get some quality comedy, tragedy, and everything in between. A documentary about a car dealership’s cruel capitalist gimmick turns into a testament to the power of the human spirit and the essential strength of community. While they deny themselves sleep to see who’ll be the last standing with their hand on the truck, the contestants cheer on themselves and each other for 77 long hours. To give you an idea of the kind of tapestry of humanity this movie offers: Robert Altman was adapting it into a feature film at the time of his death. – Lina Fisher
