RaMell Ross’ CV may be short, but it’s potent as hell. Before he wrote and directed the formally inventive, emotionally wrecking Nickel Boys – his first narrative film, which earned him an Oscar nom for Best Adapted Screenplay – he made his documentary feature debut with 2018’s Hale County This Morning, This Evening. An experimental, nonlinear look at Black life in the titular Alabama county, it too earned an Oscar nom, plus a Peabody Award and festival huzzahs. AFS presents this screening in collaboration with UT’s John L. Warfield Center for African and African American Studies and features a post-screening Q&A with Ross. – Kimberley Jones
