Call me an SJW, but all the sugary sing-alongs, hand jives, and replays of John Travolta’s incredulous “Sandy!” in the world can’t entirely wash the yucky taste of Grease’s dated, “it’s okay to change your entire personality for a man” resolution out of my mouth. Thank God for legendary choreographer Kenny Ortega, then, who kept the campiness, the hooks, and the indelible dance sequences, but updated the messaging, for my generation’s answer to the original teen musical. Still, you can’t have HSM without Grease – it’s got groove, it’s got meaning, you know – which makes this the ultimate double feature. – Carys Anderson
