Grandmaster II, the sophomore album from 11-piece cosmic funk ensemble Grandmaster, promises to build on the band’s ever-evolving mythology. To celebrate its release, Grandmaster’s bringing a “super party” to the State Theatre. Formed in 2023 with members from several different Austin acts, the bucket-hat-wearing virtuosos have since entranced the city with their signature symphony of galactically textured prog-funk. Their epic 2024 self-titled debut features exuberant fusion rhythms, soulful voices, and plenty of funky keys, while simultaneously inventing the lore of the “Grandmaster” – an intergalactic traveler who journeys to Earth on his quest to collect artifacts and write his all-knowing Sacred Prophecy. Getting the show started are acclaimed trumpeter Mike Sailors’ Quintet and local jazz fusion trio Dodo. – Joseph Gonzalez
