Anime is cool, and here is a most shining example supporting this claim. Mamoru Oshii (whose opus Angel’s Egg just enjoyed a 4K re-release) dove into the year 2029 with his 1995 feature based on a manga by Appleseed’s Masamune Shirow. Major Motoko Kusanagi is more machine than organic, which is the norm in New Port City where cyborg tech has spread throughout. With partner Batou, she chases a hacker known only as the Puppet Master – and finds her own humanity in question at every turn. Gorgeously animated with Kenji Kawai-composed music throughout, APL breaks out the primo AV equipment for this viewing: a 130-inch projector screen and what they call “BIG sound.” – James Scott
