Gandahar

Everybody’s favorite stoner movie, Fantastic Planet, is the best-known venture by talented French animation director René Laloux, but Gandahar proves it’s not his only work worth watching. Laloux reprises his interest in nature vs. machines in this 1987 tale of a utopian planet that is besieged by automatons called the Men of Metal that turn people to stone. Gandaharian Prince Sylvain goes to investigate and instead gets caught up with a talking brain called Metamorphis. With a synthy flute-forward score by Gabriel Yared (Betty Blue) and plenty of psychedelic animated boobs, this one gives Fantastic Planet a run for its money. – Lina Fisher
