KaiJune comes to an end with the one giant rubber-suit monster you can always trust. Godzilla was always disinterested in those tiny humans and just looking for a fight; Mothra only hangs out with those two tiny fairies; but Gamera, Daiei Film’s own giant flying turtle, is the real defender of humanity. Reinvented for this 1995 reboot as a weapon designed to protect Atlantis from the menace of the birdlike Gyaos, he connects with young Asagi Kusanagi, a schoolgirl in possession of a mystical magatama. – Richard Whittaker
