First They Came for My College

Fascists hate educated people, and so it’s inevitable that they come for schools. Often, they’ll pick a small, remote, liberal entity to take down first, much as Hitler practiced the devastating tactics of Blitzkrieg in Spain rather than against his real long-term targets. That’s why the first real effort to destroy a university by America’s homegrown anti-intellectuals was the New College in Florida. Fortunately, alumnus and Austin Film Society head of film & creative media Holly Herrick heard and brought in longtime Austin filmmaker Patrick Bresnan to record what was being done to academia. As those same tools of oppression are popping up at UT and around the nation, learn about how they were deployed, the damage already inflicted, and how to fight back. – Richard Whittaker
